Why Buy a Keyboard Tray ?

The goal when purchasing a keyboard tray should be
to put yourself in an optimal typing posture.

The ideal typing posture, according to the ergonomic experts at
Cornell University, is where both static and dynamic muscle loads
are minimized. This posture is achieved when the keyboard is
below seated elbow height and the keyboard base is gently
sloped away from the user so that the key tops are accessible
to the hands in a neutral posture

The Basics

The typical keyboard tray consists of three components: the
keyboard arm, the keyboard tray and the track.

A typical installation involves installing the track on the underside
of your desk or table. The next step is to secure the keyboard
tray to the keyboard arm. Finally, slide the keyboard arm into the
track.

Fit

 One of the first things to consider when buying a keyboard tray is
 how much room is available under your desk. Is there enough 
 room for the track to be installed under the desk without 
 protruding.  Track lengths are typically range from 17 to 23
 inches.

 

Height adjustability is another important feature to consider when
buying a keyboard tray. Make certain the keyboard arm offers
enough adjustability to accomodate the desk where it will be installed.

Tilt

Does the keyboard arm offer a tilt option enabling the
 user to achieve the optimal typing postion?

Mouse Tray

The keyboard tray should have an area dedicated for the mouse.
There are many different styles of mouse trays available.
Some keyboard trays, particularly those with a width of 27
inches or more, have the mousing area on the same surface
as the keyboard tray. Others, usually with a width of 19-20
inches, have mouse trays that are attached.
